Repository

#1 Post by deveyus » Thu Dec 23, 2010 2:18 am

I see all kinds of useful addons, and scripts of different sorta scattered all over the forums, is there any way we could get a comprehensive list of them all so that they're easier to find?

Would it be better as a sticky, or something to add to the wiki?

(I lean towards the wiki for easy table formatting of what it is, and links to full descriptions, version information for compatibility, documentation for its use and more.)

i started a list of userfunctions, with my functions to start with, with the intention of stickying it if there was sufficient interest but it didn't get any response.

If someone wants to gather them all up for me, I can build a quick website to allow everyone to download them and allow the respected owners to upload updates.

Of course Rock5, pretty sure you've already done just about everything. At least once. deathdealer, it'd be best if we put it in a 'public' space, such as the wiki. I think using rock5's starting list, I'll just start on myself there.

Edit: Here's what I'm thinking, thoughts? [ http://www.solarstrike.net/wiki/index.p ... Repository ]

Also, there were some areas I just couldn't fill in, I just didn't know....

I like it and because it's the wiki that means anyone can change it or add to it.

Made a slight change to repository, creating an additional section for files that are not specifically addons but are also very useful. One of the best examples of what would go there are the rock5's Miller Ranch scripts. They are not addons but they are "common shareable content".

Waypoints and the like were already finding their way there, that was likely a good idea.

I'd like to move for a motion to request that this is merged with rock5's Useful Userfunctions and made a sticky. It seems to me a better idea now that it is included in wiki and also to request a reference to this wiki page in the rom-bot wiki.

I've updated the addon repo with rock5's useful userfunctions from the post mentioned above.
EDIT: Also added Miller's Ranch waypoints in the Other Files section.

I'm not sure what you mean by 'merge'. Personally I like the wiki idea better. Why would we need to sticky the 'Useful Userfunctions' thread unless you want it to point to the wiki? Actually that thread could probably be closed.

On another note, i was looking at the repo website and i thought to myself 'what happans if the files get updated in the functions thread but the download on the repo page doesn't get updated?'. The downloads would have to be continually kept up to date. That makes the repo page a high maintenance page.

I'd like to move that the download be removed so people have to go the the threads to download the latest version. So in effect it changes from a repo of files to a list of links to threads.

seems to be a good idea to me, anyone else got any thoughts on this?
EDIT:Well I removed the download links as that made more sense, Only thing is what if a certain script has a wiki page? should we refer to the wiki or to the forum post? Mail mods is referred to the wiki but all other are referred to the forum.

I didn't even know that wiki page existed. lol

But we have the same problem. Those download links need to be kept uptodate.

But I still like linking to the forum thread better because it gives users a place to download the latest version and comment and make suggestions on the file. I don't think I like having wiki pages for userfunctions. i personally think it's enough to have the repository pointing to the threads.

Also if someone comes across the mail mod wiki and wants to make a suggestion or comment, where do they go? There's no link to the userfunctions thread.

ok DONE!
Now all link to forum pages and there is no direct download. I would only appreciate if some authors would take 5 mins to add some scripts to the wiki, so it starts to build up. I don't mind managing it but I can't be aware of every script there is!

Sorry about that. I probably would have got around to it eventually. I appreciate that you did it for me. Thanks.

oh no problem, I did it because yours are the most used/known ones, but i'd like everyone to start posting their scripts so we could have a decent db. The community would improve a lot from this, it would stop people who keep asking for stuff that already exist and others would save a lot of time not having to rewrite and debug scripts, because someone else has already done that!

C'mon ppl chip in!

Another thing, is it possible to have guide or something on how to make an addition to the repo? Like the file or whatever should have a thread dedicated to it, the file should be kept upto date on the first post, it should have a description and instructions on the first post and the repo link should point to the first post. Stuff like that. For instance my lootBodies function was created in response to someone elses query. I should probably create a dedicated thread and add that to the repo. What do you think?

I've created a sub-forum for just this purpose. It's a little more organized that way. rock5 has had moderator status for awhile now, so he can also help move relevant topics there.

Although when you first made me a moderator I could never find any extra controls.

I just had a look now. I see them now. So I can move posts as required.
